We've recently had one of those "only in Kansas" adventures that I thought I'd share with you. There is an older couple from the church that has about 20 chickens. We have been blessed to receive eggs from them on a regular basis and may I just tell you what a difference there is in farm fresh eggs as compared to store bought! This couple was going to be out of town for several days and asked if we would like to care for the chickens during that time. We would also be able to keep whatever eggs were layed. We thought that would be fun...and it was! They mentioned that it would be best to keep all of them in the house/coop as there were many raccoons and coyotes and it would just be easier. However, when we arrived the first night to feed and collect, they were all out roaming the huge yard. No big deal. All but one of them followed us into the coop and the girls collected the eggs. (We collected between 15 and 20 everyday. Can you say, "egg salad"?) We then spent nearly 40 minutes getting that ONE chicken into the coop! Hilarious! How many non-country folk does it take to get one chicken in the coop? It took one of us at the coop door (to keep the other 19 in) and two more to cover all other directions. That left Gracie inside the coop waiting, quietly. FINALLY, we got the chicken in! We were thankful that we didn't have to do that every night although it would make for a great workout alternative and is much cheaper than a gym membership! Gracie had a problem, however. Every time the 19 chickens inside the coop got startled or excited, they would frantically flap their wings which made quite a racket! It frightened her every time! Being the problem solver that she is, the next day when we were leaving the house to collect the eggs, she came out to the van wearing white, fluffy earmuffs. She explained, "This way, it won't be so loud and scary when they make all that noise with their wings!" :)
